QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Low-cost therapy FAQs

Find answers to the questions people most commonly ask about choosing a therapist, booking appointments and starting therapy with The Therapy Yard. TEST

Working with a therapist in training

Our Low-Cost therapists are undertaking advanced specialist training in psychosexual and relationship therapy and are student members of COSRT, the professional body for the field.

They have reached the clinical stage of their training and have been assessed by their training institutions as ready to work therapeutically with clients under supervision. Some are already qualified and registered therapists undertaking further specialist training.

Yes. Before beginning clinical work, each therapist must be assessed and approved by their training institution as ready to work with clients under supervision.

They also complete The Therapy Yard’s own selection and onboarding process before seeing clients with us.

Not necessarily. Some of our Low-Cost therapists are already qualified and registered therapists with existing clinical experience who are undertaking additional specialist training in psychosexual and relationship therapy.

Others are earlier in their professional careers, but all have reached the stage at which their training institution has approved them to work therapeutically with clients under supervision.

Every therapist is personally interviewed and selected by The Therapy Yard. We consider their training and experience, as well as their therapeutic approach, professionalism and suitability for working with our clients.

Before seeing clients, they must also meet our onboarding requirements, including appropriate professional insurance, clinical supervision and a valid DBS check.

Our therapists are expected to work within their level of training and competence.

If at any stage you or your therapist feels your needs would be better supported by someone with different or more extensive experience, this will be discussed with you. Where appropriate, we can help arrange or recommend an onward referral to a suitably qualified specialist.

Is low-cost therapy right for me?

The Pre-Assessment Call is a brief suitability check to make sure there are no obvious reasons why working with a therapist in training may not be appropriate for you at this time.

It isn’t a therapy session and you won’t need to tell us your whole story.

We’ll ask a small number of questions about your current circumstances and wellbeing.

This may include significant mental health difficulties, active addiction, current suicidal thoughts or self-harm, safeguarding concerns or other circumstances that might mean you would be better supported by a more experienced clinician or another specialist service.

We’ll also briefly check what you’d like help with to make sure it falls within the therapist’s areas of competence.

It doesn’t mean therapy isn’t right for you.

It may simply mean we believe you would be better supported by a therapist with a different level of experience or specialist expertise. Where appropriate, we can suggest one of our qualified specialist therapists or signpost you towards another suitable service.

Yes. You can browse our Low-Cost therapists and choose a preferred therapist when booking your Pre-Assessment Call.

We’ll still check that the service and therapist are appropriate for your needs before therapy begins.

You don’t need to choose a therapist yourself.

Simply book a General Pre-Assessment. If Low-Cost Therapy is suitable for you, we’ll suggest available therapists whose experience, areas of interest and availability may be a good match.

Our Low-Cost service is designed to provide focused, time-limited therapy for up to 12 sessions.

This gives you and your therapist a clear framework in which to identify what you’d like to work on and focus your therapy accordingly.

No. Twelve sessions is the maximum, not a fixed course.

You and your therapist will review the work as you go and may decide that fewer sessions are appropriate.

Sessions will usually take place weekly, particularly at the beginning of therapy.

Where appropriate, you and your therapist may agree to move to fortnightly sessions depending on your needs, progress and the nature of the work.

Your therapist will discuss the ending with you in advance, giving you time to review your work and progress together.

You may finish before 12 sessions if you’ve achieved the focus of your therapy. If further support would be beneficial, your therapist can discuss appropriate next steps with you, which may include onward referral to a qualified specialist.

Appointments & fees

Low-Cost Therapy is:

£50 per session for individual therapy
£60 per session for couples therapy

In-person appointments, where available, are:

£65 per session for individual therapy
£75 per session for couples therapy

Our Low-Cost therapists are completing supervised clinical work as part of their professional or specialist training.

This allows us to offer specialist psychosexual and relationship therapy at a reduced fee while therapists gain the clinical experience required as part of their development.

The lower fee reflects their training status within this specialist field, rather than therapy being treated as a lower-quality service.

Yes. Low-Cost couples therapy is available where it is considered appropriate following pre-assessment.

The pre-assessment helps us make sure your needs are suitable for focused work with a therapist in specialist training.

Yes. If you’re looking for couples therapy, each partner needs to book and complete their own individual pre-assessment before starting therapy together.

This gives each of you the opportunity to discuss what has brought you to therapy individually and helps us assess whether the service is appropriate for you both.

Once both pre-assessments are complete and the service is deemed suitable, you’ll be able to proceed with booking couples sessions.

Low-Cost Therapy is available online, with some therapists also offering in-person appointments depending on their location and availability.

Each therapist’s profile will show the appointment options they currently offer.

Availability varies between therapists.

If you’ve already found someone you’d like to work with, you can choose them when booking your Pre-Assessment Call. Alternatively, book a General Pre-Assessment and we can help identify suitable available therapists.

No. You can choose a preferred therapist if someone feels right for you, or book a General Pre-Assessment and let us help with the matching.

If Low-Cost Therapy is suitable, we’ll suggest therapists based on your needs and their areas of experience and availability.

Clinical supervision is a standard and important part of professional therapeutic practice, including for qualified therapists.

Your therapist regularly meets with an experienced clinical supervisor to reflect on their work, consider different approaches and receive professional guidance where needed. This supports safe, ethical and thoughtful practice.

Your therapist may discuss aspects of their clinical work in supervision where this supports your therapy.

Identifying information is not used, and supervision takes place within professional confidentiality requirements. Its purpose is to support your therapist’s clinical work, not to disclose your identity.

Yes. Your therapy is confidential and therapists are required to work within professional and ethical confidentiality standards.

As with all therapy, there are limited circumstances where information may need to be shared, particularly where there is a serious safeguarding concern. Your therapist will explain these boundaries before therapy begins.

Simply book a Pre-Assessment Call.

Choose a therapist you’d like to work with, or select a General Pre-Assessment if you’d like us to help you find the right match.

If Low-Cost Therapy is suitable, we’ll then confirm the next steps so you can begin therapy.
