QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Questions & Answers

Find answers to the questions people most commonly ask about choosing a therapist, booking appointments and starting therapy with The Therapy Yard. TEST

Choosing a therapist

Start by looking for a therapist with relevant experience in the issue you would like support with, alongside an approach, fee and availability that work for you. Feeling comfortable with the therapist also matters, although it is normal not to know immediately whether someone will be the right fit.

You can browse our therapist profiles to compare their experience, areas of expertise, locations and appointment availability. If you are unsure where to begin, you can request personalised therapist recommendations, and we will suggest suitable options based on the information you provide.

Yes. Every therapist featured by The Therapy Yard is professionally trained, professionally registered, fully insured and has been carefully vetted before joining our specialist network.

The majority of our psychosexual and relationship therapists are registered or accredited with COSRT (College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists), the UK’s specialist professional body for psychosexual and relationship therapy. Others are registered with recognised professional organisations appropriate to their qualifications and areas of practice.

Before joining The Therapy Yard, all therapists undergo our own vetting process, where we interview them and review their qualifications, professional registration, specialist training, insurance and clinical experience. They are also expected to maintain appropriate continuing professional development (CPD) and work within the ethical standards of their professional body.

Where a therapist is a placement therapist completing specialist clinical training, this is always clearly identified on their profile so you can make an informed choice.

A psychosexual therapist has specialist training in sexual difficulties, intimacy and the interaction between physical, psychological and relationship factors. They may support concerns such as erectile difficulties, painful sex, low desire, sexual anxiety, orgasm difficulties or differences in desire between partners.

A relationship therapist focuses more broadly on communication, conflict, trust, attachment, separation and patterns within relationships. Many of our therapists are trained in both areas, which can be particularly helpful when sexual and relationship concerns overlap.

Yes. If you are unsure which therapist is most suitable, you can tell us a little about the support you are looking for, your preferences and your availability. We will review your enquiry and suggest therapists whose experience and current availability appear to be a good match.

You are not committing to therapy by requesting recommendations. You can review the suggested therapist profiles, compare your options and decide whether you would like to book. You can also continue browsing all available therapists yourself at any time.

Yes. The relationship between you and your therapist is an important part of therapy, and occasionally the first person you choose may not feel like the right fit. This does not mean therapy cannot help or that you have done anything wrong.

You can browse other therapist profiles or contact us for help identifying alternative options. Where possible, we can suggest therapists with a different approach, experience, availability or working style that may feel more suitable for you.

Booking an appointment

Once you’ve found a therapist, simply select a suitable appointment from their online diary and complete your booking securely online. If you’re unsure which therapist is right for you, you can request a personalised recommendation instead. We’ll suggest therapists based on your needs, preferences and availability, helping you find the right fit.

Once your appointment is confirmed, you’ll receive a confirmation email with your appointment details and any information you’ll need before your first session.

You’ll also be asked to complete a short registration and a number of confidential forms before your appointment. These help your therapist understand your circumstances, ensure they have the information they need to work safely with you, and explain how your personal information will be handled.

If you’ve booked couples therapy, each partner must register separately using their own email address and complete their own confidential forms. This allows both partners to provide their own information privately and ensures your therapist has everything needed before your first session together.

We recommend completing your forms as soon as possible after booking so your therapist has time to review them before your appointment.

Many of our therapists have appointments available within 7 days, and in some cases sooner, although availability varies by therapist, location, and whether you’re looking for online or in-person sessions.

You can view each therapist’s live availability while booking, making it easy to find an appointment that works for you. If you need to be seen as soon as possible or aren’t sure who to choose, our team can also recommend therapists with the earliest availability based on your preferences.

If your preferred therapist doesn’t have a suitable appointment available, we’ll be happy to help you find another specialist with similar expertise.

Many of our therapists offer both online and in-person appointments, while some work exclusively online or from specific locations.

Each therapist’s profile clearly shows the appointment options they provide, making it easy to find someone who fits your preferences. Online therapy allows you to access specialist support wherever you are, while in-person appointments are available at locations across the UK.

If you need to change or cancel your appointment, please contact your therapist as soon as possible. Appointments can be rescheduled or cancelled with at least 72 hours’ notice. Changes made within 72 hours will incur the full session fee in accordance with the therapist’s cancellation policy, so we recommend letting your therapist know as early as possible.

Therapy costs & payments

Our therapists set their own fees, which vary depending on their qualifications, experience, specialisms and appointment format.

As a guide:

Qualified therapists offer online individual therapy from £70 and couples therapy from £90.

Our Specialist Low-Cost Therapy service starts from £50 for individual therapy and £60 for couples therapy, provided by carefully selected trainee therapists in the final stages of their professional training.

You’ll always see the therapist’s fees clearly displayed before you book.

Each therapist is an independent practitioner and sets their own fees.

Prices can vary depending on factors such as professional qualifications, specialist expertise, years of experience, appointment length and whether sessions take place online or in person.

Whatever your budget, we aim to provide access to high-quality specialist therapy across a range of price points.

Yes.

Our Specialist Low-Cost Therapy service provides time-limited therapy with carefully selected trainee therapists who are completing advanced specialist training.

All trainee therapists receive regular clinical supervision and work within the same professional and ethical standards expected across our service.

A brief assessment helps ensure this option is suitable for your needs before therapy begins.

Payment is normally made when you book your appointment.

If your therapist arranges an appointment directly with you, payment should usually be made within 24 hours of receiving your booking confirmation to secure your session.

If you need to cancel your appointment, you’ll receive a full refund provided you cancel more than 72 hours before your scheduled appointment. Cancellations made within 72 hours are subject to our cancellation policy.

Full payment details are provided during the booking process.

We do not work directly with private health insurers, so all therapy fees must be paid by you at the time of booking.

However, we’re aware of some clients who have successfully reclaimed the cost of therapy from their private health insurer. Any such claim is a private arrangement between you and your insurer, and we are not involved in the claims process.

If you’re considering making a claim, we recommend checking with your insurer before booking to confirm whether your policy provides cover for the type of therapy you are seeking.

Your first therapy sessions

Your first session is an opportunity to get to know your therapist and begin exploring what has brought you to therapy.

Together, you’ll discuss your concerns, what you’d like to achieve, and any relevant background that may help your therapist understand your situation. They’ll also explain how they work, answer any questions you may have, and begin discussing a plan for therapy that feels right for you.

There is no expectation to share everything in your first session. You can work at a pace that feels comfortable.

Most people begin with weekly sessions, as regular appointments help build momentum, maintain continuity and give therapy the best opportunity to be effective.

As therapy progresses, your therapist may recommend moving to fortnightly sessions where appropriate. This is often introduced once you’ve begun making progress and no longer need the same level of regular support.

Appointments less frequently than every two weeks are generally not recommended. Longer gaps between sessions can make it more difficult to build therapeutic momentum, revisit important themes and achieve meaningful progress. For this reason, our therapists would not normally take on new clients who are only able to attend less frequently than fortnightly, as they want to ensure you’re receiving therapy in a way that’s most likely to benefit you.

Your therapist will discuss the most appropriate session frequency with you and tailor this to your individual needs throughout your therapy.

There isn’t a fixed number of sessions that’s right for everyone. The length of therapy depends on the issues you’d like to work on, your goals, and how you progress over time.

Some people find that a relatively small number of sessions helps them work through a specific concern, while others choose longer-term therapy to explore more complex or longstanding difficulties.

Your therapist will regularly review your progress with you and discuss whether therapy continues to feel helpful. Therapy isn’t open-ended by default, and you’ll always have the opportunity to review your goals and decide together when the time feels right to finish.

The aim is never to keep you in therapy for longer than you need, but to provide the right level of support to help you make meaningful and lasting progress.

Yes. Confidentiality is a fundamental part of therapy.

Everything you discuss with your therapist is treated confidentially and your personal information is handled securely in accordance with data protection requirements.

There are a small number of exceptional circumstances where a therapist may need to share information, such as where there is a serious risk of harm to you or someone else, or where they are legally required to do so. Your therapist will explain confidentiality fully during your first session.

There’s no special preparation required.

Before your appointment, you’ll simply need to complete your registration and any pre-session forms requested by your therapist.

Beyond that, just come as you are. Many people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that’s completely understandable. Your therapist will guide the conversation and help you feel at ease, so there’s no pressure to know exactly what to say or where to begin.

Additional  questions

Yes, although how this works depends on your circumstances.

As part of couples therapy, your therapist may decide that it’s helpful to have occasional individual sessions with each partner. Where this happens, the sessions are offered equally to both partners to maintain therapeutic balance and support the work you’re doing together as a couple.

If ongoing individual therapy is recommended alongside couples therapy, this would normally be with a different therapist. This helps avoid conflicts of interest and ensures both the individual and couples therapy can remain focused, impartial and effective.

Your therapist will always discuss the most appropriate approach with you and explain the reasons for any recommendations.

Individual and couples therapy are different types of therapy with different goals.

If you feel your partner’s involvement would be helpful, discuss this with your therapist first. In some situations they may recommend arranging a separate couples session instead, ensuring that the purpose and boundaries of your individual therapy remain clear.

That’s completely normal.

Many people aren’t sure whether they would benefit from individual therapy, couples therapy or specialist psychosexual therapy when they first get in touch.

If you’re unsure, our team can help you understand your options and recommend the type of therapy and therapist that best matches your needs before you book.

Many of our therapists also offer a complimentary 10-minute introductory call. If you’d like the opportunity to ask questions, discuss your circumstances or explore whether a therapist feels like the right fit before booking a full appointment, an introductory call can be a helpful place to start.

Yes. If you’re attending online therapy, you and your partner don’t need to be in the same place.

Many couples join sessions from different homes, workplaces or even different countries. You’ll each receive access to the same secure online appointment and can join from your own device, making therapy accessible wherever you are.

This can be particularly helpful if you live apart, travel frequently, work away from home or simply find it more convenient to join from different locations.

The only exception is that, due to professional insurance restrictions, our therapists cannot provide therapy to clients who are physically located in the Americas at the time of their appointment.

Absolutely.

If you have a question about therapy, need help choosing a therapist or simply aren’t sure where to start, our team is happy to help.

You can contact us before booking for guidance, or if you would prefer, you can request a personalised therapist recommendation based on your needs and preferences. Many of our therapists also offer a complimentary introductory call, giving you the opportunity to speak with them before arranging your first appointment.
